The Memorial

A place of remembrance, education and unity

The Brothers in Arms Memorial is being created on Veterans Memorial Parkway in London, Ontario, honouring Indian and Canadian soldiers whose shared First World War history deserves lasting recognition.

Why this memorial

More than a million soldiers of the Indian Army served in the First World War, in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Canada, with a population of roughly eight million at the time, sent more than 600,000 into uniform. Their forces fought under the same command, in some of the same battles, and their losses are recorded on the same memorials overseas.

In Canada that shared history is not widely known. The Brothers in Arms Memorial exists to change that — to give the story a physical place in London, Ontario where it can be taught, visited and remembered.

What is being built

The memorial brings together a granite monument, plaques recording the Indian and Canadian regiments of the First World War, scenic pathways, and heritage trees planted across the grounds. It is designed as a place to walk through rather than simply look at.

The project is led by Srishti Foundation, working with community partners in London and beyond.
