Vimy Ridge

Vimy, France

The first occasion on which all four divisions of the Canadian Corps attacked together, and a defining event in Canadian national memory.

The Canadian Corps captured Vimy Ridge in April 1917, the first time its four divisions fought as one formation. The Canadian National Vimy Memorial now stands on the ridge.

Indian infantry divisions had left the Western Front by the end of 1915 and were not present at Vimy. This entry is included because the memorial commemorates the Canadian story alongside the Indian one, not because the two forces served together here.
